A child of the North, familiar with the Baltic Sea from her youth in the dinghy classes - Nicola Friesen (NRV) on “Smaug” is winner of the 2016 International German Championship of the Dragons.
So many congratulations - first time this prestigious title goes to a lady! Nicola with the very experienced sailors Oliver Mose (NRV) and Michael Lipp (DTYC), all members of leading German sailing clubs, worked hard and with the necessary enthusiasm on their performance – participation in the complete Cascais Winter Series 2015 / 2016 and Grand Prix experience in Kuehlungsborn helped them to become a great team.
Second place for the Bavarian “Dottore Amore” Dr. Ingo Ehrlicher (BYC) with Phil Blinn (DTYC) and Thomas Auracher (YCAT). Michael Zankel (GER 1123) on “Pow Wow” with his Portuguese crew Pedro Andrade and Charles Nankin at the third place.
4 days with just perfect but also challenging conditions: best and nearly dry south-westerly to west wind sometimes up to 20 / 22 knots. Due to the offshore wind no big waves. 8 races with 7 day’s winners – one of those IDA Vice Chairman Dr. Helmut Schmidt and his team - only the “Pow Wow”-team was successful in winning 2 races at the first day.
We had to wait for the decision of this International German Championship up to the very end. Dr. Ingo Ehrlicher and his crew finally were the only competitors to beat the „Smaug“, if they would have finished with a 3rd position in the final race, but they achieved place 9 and won the second place of this exciting championship.
The 43 Dragon sailors were rewarded for their journey to the Baltic Sea at the Luebeck bay also by a great after-race atmosphere and “Gemütlichkeit” in the hosting Niendorfer Yacht-Club.
Next year the Bavarian sailing club ASC invites to the International German Championship 2017 and it’s looking forward to all German and international Dragon crews finding their way to discover the beautiful located Ammersee in the South of Germany.
