Hong Kong Dragon Championship

The Dragon fleet had a great start for this year's Hong Kong Championship with all boats incredibly close together. With a wind of 10-14 knots, Race Officer Inge Strompf-Jepsen managed to launch three one-mile beat windward/leeward courses on the east side of Lamma Island. Conditions were particularly challenging with no crew dominating and competitors having to constantly assess the changing current and the shifting north-easterly wind to make the best of the course. Frederic Roumier (HKG40) commented: "It was a very competitive day: on a couple of tacks you could pass 3 boats or loose 3 spots. We are looking forward to the competition in the coming two days". The day saw three different winners with Lowell Chang (HKG46) taking the cannon on the first race, Tam Nguyen (HKG55) winning Race 2 while Simon Chan (HK8) took Race 3 after a perfect committee boat start. At this early stage of the regatta, Tam (HKG55) leads with 8 points ahead of Lowell with 10 points and Marc Castagnet 11 points. But everything is to play for with 6 more races to come over the weekend, 2 discards (if more than 8 races are sailed) and a very competitive fleet! Thanks to the on water jury led by Cathy Delaney, incidents were sorted on the spot and everyone very much enjoyed the Brugse Zot beer back on the pontoon of Middle Island after the competition thanks to our Belgian Dragon friends BEL82. Sponsor Central Ocean Managing Director and HKG57 skipper Bram van Olphen commented: "We are delighted to be associated with this event for a sixth straight time. The venue and racing is second to none, so we wish all participants another glorious two days!"
