Royal Vancouver Yacht Club’s June One-Design Regatta took place over the week-end with nine Dragon’s on the line. Paul Taylor’s Jumala was the boat to beat after Day 1 with four bullets and a 4th during typical westerly conditions on a mostly sunny day. Jim Burns’ Ayrborn finally in the water after months of reconditioning was neck in neck with Ken Reid’s Eagle each with 12 points. Sunday was an over cast day with shifty and puffy easterly winds creating challenges for Race Office John Culter. One race had to be terminated after a ninety degree shift during the first weather leg. Nonetheless, the race committee was able to complete five races each exhausting for every skipper and crew as they wrestled with shifty, puffy and patchy wind conditions. It was a tougher day for Paul Taylor’s Jumala with two 8ths and a 7th as Paul found himself too often in a hole, on the wrong side of the course or on the wrong side of a wind shift. Consistency was the key with Eagle taking a 3rd or better in every race. Eagle ended up with a lock on first place with 20 points, Jumala second with 24 and Ayrborn 3rd with 25. Lorne Chapman’s Eclipse, also reconditioned during the winter served notice with a bullet and a 2nd place and a string of 4ths. Both Jim Burns and Lorne Chapman are former very competitive J24 sailors who have recently jumped to RVYC’s growing Dragon fleet. The next regatta for the Dragon fleet is the WAVES Easter Seals Regatta June 22-24. A number of boats in the fleet have been making regular appearances for the Dragon start at RVYC’s Wednesday Evening Series.
