Swedish Championship Aug 4-6J. Christensen & Co wins Championship, J.Wallenberg & Co Swedish Champions
Thursday through Saturday (Aug 4-6) we held the Swedish Championship (also the third cup race as part of our Audi Dragon Cup) in Bastad in the southern part of Sweden. For many, Bastad is internationally known for hosting one of the ATP tennis championships. Now it is also famous (amongst dragon sailors) for hosting one of our more pleasant albeit challenging Swedish Championships.

With 46 registered entries, and 44 on the startingline, the event was already off to an inspirational start! 8 dragons from Denmark, one Finnish contender and 35 boats of Swedish descent made for a great mix both on the waters and around the social event. The waters of “Laholmsbukten” are fairly shallow and to the East surrounded by the great “Hallandsas” (a substantial ridge!). To the West the open seas of Kattegat can deliver interesting seas. The first two days offered medium winds from the East, whereby the main challenge was interpreting the winds coming down from the “Hallands-ridge”. It was turbulent times, but as always an inspiring challenge for a sailor. The last day, Saturday, the wind changed to Southwest, light-to-medium breeze, whereby we got some experience with the more traditional seas of Kattegat. A little bit for all flavors!

And the results?. The first and only race on Thursday was already a sign of the strength of the Danes. DEN 394 (Pehrsson/Skafte-Holm x2) took the first bullet with former Swedish Champions “Klunk” in second.
On Friday three races were held, where all three races where won by non-Swedes! First race was won by the ruling European Champions onboard DEN 399 (Christensen/Amdersen/Bagger), the second race was won by FIN 88 (Everhall-Blom/Wagned/Waack) and the final race of the day was won by DEN 403 (Bandelowsky/Hvalso/Hey ). However, the daily first after Fridays racing was delivered to the foremost Swedish boat, “MING” (Wallenberg/Baltscheffsky/Friis), who after four races and a solid series of 3,7,4,4 were leading the Swedish Championship in solid style.
On the final racing day, Saturday, another three races were scheduled and delivered. Now with new wind conditions from the Southwest. First race was tough for the leading boat “Ming” who finished 19th in race 5. Instead yet another Dane showed off their dragon skills in bright red & white colours with DEN 401 (Schoenherr/Gravad/Friis) winning the first race of the day (race 5). Second race was won again by Valdemar & Co on DEN 403, and the final race of the Swedish Championship was yet again won by our European Champs on DEN 399.
At 41 points, including two solid bullets, Christensen and crew were well-worth the first place of our Swedish Championship, four points ahead of HRH Prince Fredrik/Palm/Rosengard-Hartsberg and a further one point ahead of DEN 394. Best Swedish boat and thereby also Swedish Champions, were “MING”. We congratulate both the winner of the Swedish Championship and the new ruling Swedish Champs for a great regatta. We also thank all enthusiastic participants for making this one of our most inspiring championships in quite some time and also Bastad for arranging a superb regatta, both at sea and on land. We hope to be back soon!

Now onwards to Denmark, for the Danish Open, and give our Danish friends a taste of their own medicine!  Patrik Salén (Chairman, Swedish Dragon Association, SWE 369)
