Dear Dragon sailors, let me explain what you can expect in Italy in 2013.
First of all the "pesto", the green sauce originating in Genoa in the Liguria region of northern Italy. Pesto traditionally consists of basil, crushed garlic and European pine nuts blended with olive oil, Parmigiano (Parmesan cheese), and Pecorino (cheese made from sheep's milk).
The name is the contracted past participle of the Genoese word "pestâ" , which means to pound, to crush, in reference to the original method of preparation, with marble mortar and wooden pestle.
However, the ingredients in a traditionally made pesto are not "pounded" but "ground" with a circular motion of the pestle in the mortar.
Pesto is commonly used on pasta, traditionally with “lasagne”, "trofie" or "trenette". Potatoes and little green beans are also traditionally added to the dish, boiled in the same pot in which the pasta has been cooked.
Pesto will be the first engaging food to taste of the "Italian Sail & Taste Series", the regattas organized in Italy in the coming year both for racing and relaxing convivial atmosphere of the Dragon Sailors.
The main reason of this choice is the wonderful location of the Andora Dragon Cup, the 16th and 17th of February, 2013, because its magnificent weather conditions for sailing and beacuse in Andora are located the best producers of the Genovese basil DOP, the main ingredient of the Pesto.
The following opportunities offered by the Italian Sail & Taste Series is Sanremo, where the European Dragon Championship will be organized in 2014, with the Sanremo Dragon Cup (9th and 10th of March), followed after two weeks by the Italian Open Championship (from 21st to 24th March).
Both Andora Dragon Cup and Italian Open Championship (grade 2) are included in the "Hiver des Dragons", the winther series organized by Cannes Dragon International.
