Vintage Yachting Games 2012

From July 7-15 2012 the Dragon Class, together with eight other former Olympic Classes, will celebrate her Olympic past during the 2nd edition of the Vintage Yachting Games at Lake Como (ITA).

In this Olympic type event the competitors will represent their National Class Organisation (country). Each National Dragon Association is in title to enter her two best teams in this event. (The boats do not have to be from the Olympic period of the Dragon but can be new/modern boats as well). The Italian Dragon Association can enter her three best teams. The series will consist of at least 7 races. (The exact number of scheduled races has to be determined by the Vintage Yachting Organization and the IDA.) The sailing will take place on four course areas in the Northern part of Lake Como. The Dragons will share a course area with one other class.

The wind conditions in the Northern part of the lake in July are based on a thermal breeze This 14 knots Southern wind starts between noon and 13:00 hours. The average temperature is about 22-25 centigrade.

Athough sailing is paramount the Vintage will have a rich social program that consists of an opening ceremony, daily prize giving, championship dinner and closing/prize giving ceremony. As part of the overall prize giving ceremony the winning helmsmen of the classes will compete in one extra race in the 12’ Dinghy (VIP race). The location for most of the formal social events is the elegant Villa Monastero near Varenna.

The Organization anticipates on participation of about 25 Dragons from 15 countries. The total number of sailors is estimated to be about 400 and the number of boats at 200. The boats and trailers will be parked/moored in the Dervio/Bellano (between Piona and Lierna) area of the lake.

Entries have to be made between October 2011 and May 2012 by the National Dragon Associations.#

The Vintage Yachting Games Organization is a non-commercial joint venture of the following former Olympic Classes (Vintage Yachting Classes): Europe, 12’ Dinghy, O-Jolle, Flying Dutchman, Yngling, Tempest, Soling, Dragon and 5.5 Metre. Her supervisory board consists of the Presidents/Chairmen of above classes.

Dear Dragon friends,

As I mentioned in my previous mail the entry for the VYG is opened. This event, apart from the ambition of being the replacement for your Olympic event, is also a showcase for the participating classes. Make sure your class will be an eye catcher during the Vintage by entering as many as possible delegates per country to the event.

As you know the entry has two phases. First the National secretaries have to pre-enter (claim) their expected number of delegates on our website. Please do this as soon as possible on our Italian website: http://www.infowave.it/vintage2012/Entry_Form.html. Then in the second phase (10-JAN-2012 – 31-MAY-2012) the teams can be entered by name and sail number.

From our website you can also download a nice printable calendar for 2012. It comes in three sizes: Small (letter), Medium (A4) and Large (A3). Please feel free to distribute the Vintage Yachting Games calendar 2012 to the Dragon sailing community or to other interested parties. Just download from, or give a pointer to: http://vintageyachtinggames.org/ITA2012/?page_id=185.

One more thing about the prizes of the event. Besides the event prizes, daily prizes, VIP trophy and country trophy there are perpetual trophies for each class. These trophies has the names of the Olympic victors engraved on the back, symbolizing the Olympic past. On the foot the names of the Vintage Yachting Games winners will be engraved, symbolizing the continuation of the class. In that respect the winners of the Vintage Yachting Games will be expanding the direct line from the 1948 – 1972 Olympic victors.

Looking forward to receive you entries and meeting you all at Lake Como,
