BILLY BOY WINS THE DRAGON CUP
The German boat, with Vincent Hoesch Peter Liebner and Timmy Tavinor,
wins the Dragon Cup – Paul&Shark Trophy.
Six races were run in very different weather conditions
Show and elegance are ensured when Dragons, the Kings’ Class, are competing. So was also at Sanremo for the International Italian Dragon Cup – Paul&Shark Trophy, that took place fron Thursday to Sunday, organized by the Sanremo Yacht Club, in cooperation with Regione Liguria, Circolo Velico Capo Verde and the support of main sponsor Paul&Shark, and of Cielo Gioielli and Sanremo Royal Hotel.
Six of the twelve foreseen races were run. One on Thurday, due to a light wind, two on Friday and three on Saturday. Due to the bad weather conditions, with heavy rain and unsteady wind, the Sunday’s program was cancelled. Anyway six races allowed the rejection of the worst result.
Winner of the International Italian Dragon Cup – Paul&Shark Trophy is the German boat Billy Boy (Vincent Hoesch,), with a total score of 11 point (2-(8)-2-2-4-1). Second place, with 16 points (8-3-(18)-1-2-2), for Little Hook, of Italy (Giuseppe Duca, Jean Sebastien Ponce, Vittorio Zaoli). Third place for British Blue Haze (22 points; 4-6-6-3-Dnf-3), with Ivan Bradbury, Lars Hendriksen e Claus Olesen, followed by Kite (Germany), Lisa (Finland) and Bunker Queen (Ukraine), on a total fleet of 27 competitors.
Blue Haze ended first also in the special standings reserved to the classic boats.
The Dragon Cup was valid also as single race for the Italian Open Championship. Italian champion for 2013, confirming the titles won in 2011 and 2012, is Little Hook (Compagnia della Vela Venezia), with Giuseppe Duca, Jean Sebastien Ponce and Vittorio Zaoli. Second place for Buriana (Cv Amici della Vela Cervia), with Susanna Guidi, Francesco Spirito, Francesco Vallicelli and Raffaello Polini. Third Tergeste (Cv Lazzarulo – Ludovico Visone, Ferdinando Colaninno, Luca Passerini and Mauro Grandone).
“It was a competition of very high level – Beppe Zaoli, the president of the Sanremo Yacht Club said – as proved by the names we can find in the first ten places of the final standings. We are very happy for the success of the event, despite the unfair weather conditions. Now, after the end of the Dragon Cup, our Club is going to face a long work which will lead us, in a year and through other important steps, to the 2014 European Championship where the best 80 Dragons will compete at Sanremo for the European title of this wonderful class”.
