Tombola and donations for flood victims in Germany June, 14th 2013 - Most of the time, it is the other way around. Sailors must wait for wind. Today in Kühlungsborn the 150 international sailors of the BMW Dragon Grand Prix had to stay ashore as well. But because of the wind, which was too strong. Actually, the first start of the high-level Grade One event was scheduled for 11 am - was then shifted to 1 pm. "At this time we had in gusts still more than 30 knots. We do not start the races from 25 knots - that's only bad for the material", said race director Andreas Denecke. So the next possible warning signal was again postponed till 3 pm. But the long wait did not help, the wind strength remained. "We have decided that we don´t start the races today. Tomorrow we are going to start the races at 10 am", says Denecke. So the sailors had to stay ashore.
But the waiting time they bridged it well: "We have made a nice long walk along the beach promenade. Lots of nice cafes and restaurants are here, the sun is shining – that`s great", said Frank Butzmann, participant in the Dragon field. With 3150 meters the beach promenade in Kühlungsborn is one of the longest in Germany.
Other sailors passed the time in the BMW Yachtsport lounge. "It is cozy to sit in a deck chair while the sun is shining – that`s relaxing”, said Markus Wieser, who was waiting as overall leader for the next race. The mood in the lounge was very positive - also because some sponsors from the region, such as the Junge die Stadtbäckerei, Houdeck specialties - but from Bavaria - or the Classic Cafe & confectionery Röntgen already gave sandwiches, sausage and tasty strawberry cake for dessert. Even the tent of the Dragon Lounge at the Marina Kühlungsborn was well attended. "We sail in and with the nature - we know that," it said on all sides. Also: "The decision of the Race Committee was absolutely right. The wind is just too strong".
No races on the water but on land you could experience driving pleasure and elegance. The sailors could test the BMW M6 Grand Coupe.
Most of the sailors now switch their sailing outfit against a smart casual outfit. In the evening, at 7:30 PM, the "Grand Prix Champions' Evening" is going to begin, organized by the Sailing Club Kühlungsborn. "There will be a delicious meal that organizes the Hotel Upstalsboom. In addition, the prizes of Marinepool, which could have been won today, auctioned for a good cause", said Chairman of the Sailing Club Kühlungsborn. A portion of the donations that come together during the BMW Dragon Grand Prix, go to the flood victims from Germany. Also tonight, a new North Sails spinnaker and a Tutima watch are auctioned - the money goes to the World CHILDHOOD Foundation.
Tomorrow the races start earlier: first warning signal at 10 am.
