This year the Dutch Dragon Season did not open with snow on the decks. By the end of March 20 Dragon crews baked in the sun during the first weekend of the Grade 2 GP Aalsmeer, near Amsterdam. A better climate is definatly arriving in NW Europe.

In total 24 crews participated in this opening Grade 2 Event in Holland. 27 races were to be sailed over three weekends. Belgian, German, British, Estonian and Russian top sailors joined the Dutch fleet for this highly competitive event.

BEL 80 (Ben van Cauwenbergh, Steven Vermeire and Dries van den Abbeele) was the winner of the first series. GBR 770 (the Brown Family from the RCYC at Burnham-on-Crouch) won the second series. During the last weekend in demanding northerly wind conditions (shifty & gusty) it was the experienced local team NED 422 with Jan, Olivier and Dominic Bakker who was the winner of the third series.

NED 422 also took the silver ‘Cor Groot Trophy’ home for one year. It is an historic silver cup of the Dutch Dragon Fleet since 1939.

During the last series, sailed over Easter, the team sailing GBR 422 (Dmitri Bodarenko with Vadim Stacenko and Alexsander Shagalin) battled with the Bakker’s and scoring a 2nd place or the third series.

The Dutch fleet and several non-Dutch teams will now move on to Muiden for four weekends racing at the IJsselmeer to get accustomed to choppy waves. Good practice for the Dutch Open 7 – 10 September 2017 to be sailed from Muiden.

Don’t hesitate to join the competitive, international and social racing in Holland. Register at http://www.dragonclass.nl (racing) for the Muiden series and a new series in the Zeeland Estuary (Oyster and lobster territory) on 24-25 June from Colijnsplaat.
