Hong Kong Open Dragon Championship 2018

Post by Andreas Brechbuhl » Tue Nov 27, 2018 12:43 am

The Hong Kong Dragon Association can look back on a wonderful few days of exiting racing in cooperation with the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and sponsors Central Oceans, Abus and Brugse Zot. The Hong Kong Open Dragon Championship November 9-11, 2018 was hosted over the course of three days at Middle Island and racing took place South of Lamma Island.

The weekend allowed for some excellent sailing, ranging from champagne sailing conditions to more “European” weather. The Friday was perfect sailing weather with sun and a decent 15 knots of wind at Lamma. On Saturday, the sun appeared at will, but the wind strength increased to 30 knot gusts with an average speed of 22 knots. The weather played in role in the dramatic mast break for Frederic Azemard, sailing in the front pack with D47 “Wudi” and a broken boom on D50 “Phyloong II” sailed by Peter Baer. Credit has to be given to Peter for ably replacing her boom and finishing 1st in the last race of day two. The races on Sunday saw the return of both the sun and friendlier wind/sea conditions, but race 8 was thwarted when a large orange commercial ship decided to anchor near the course. In the next race, PRO Inge Strompf was forced to quickly shorten the course when an even larger orange OOCL ship slowly approached the windward mark and could not seem to decide where she would anchor.

All competitors, including the invited guests from other classes, finished the series with a big smile on their faces and a cool Brugse Zot beer in their hands upon arrival at the pontoon, which was a good sign to evaluate the regatta. Congratulations to Tam sailing HKG 55 “Zephyr” with top Hong Kong dinghy sailor Callum Gregor on scoring 5 bullets, thereby decidedly trouncing the rest of the fleet. Zephyr finished with trophies for Hong Kong Helm, Corinthian and Overall! Finishing 2nd was HKG 58 “Elfje” helmed by Andreas Brechbuhl. The final spot on the podium was for team HKG 59 “Dragonfly”, helmed by Bram van Olphen, whom unpacked the boat just two days before the competition after we shipped it in from Holland.

The Hong Kong Dragon Association would like to thank all involved in making this yet another successful event! Please don’t hesitate to check out the recap of the event on the Hong Kong Dragon Facebook or click the below link.
