Cannes Yacht Club Winter Cup and Challenge Jerboa

Series 2 of the "l'Hiver des Dragon" 2013

Nearly two years since the Dragon was last out for a competitive regatta, and what great conditions to return in. Don’t ask me what happened at the front you’ll have to read the results for that, although by the time of the last race we were getting closer to see the action and a couple of wooden boats were doing pretty well.

The although not large 17 boats, were pretty closely matched and individual race winners are spread throughout the final top 11 final placings. So three days of racing on offer from Yacht Club de Cannes. The weather day 1 resembles an autumn Northern European day, a gently introduction for the crews from those northern latitudes, but the wind blew initially gently from the west and then with increasing strength. The race committee got on with the job but some 40 degree shifts made getting the course set difficult, surprising considering the strength of the wind. A bit of perseverance and a race was away in around 10 knots. The winter breeze held for the rest of the afternoon and a couple of races were held.

Day 2 and Day 3 change of weather and we get clear blue skies, people start saying it’s great here there is sun, been here too long, take the sun for granted, what’s the wind going to do? No worries, after a bit of a shaky start on day 2 when it dies to nothing half way up the first beat, race quickly abandoned, good decision. The wind then settles in from the west again with up to 15 knots at times. Over the next 2 days 5 races are completed in pretty much Champagne sailing conditions. Best of all, my perspective at least, last race, 4 boats behind us, crew moral improves no end.

Next Winter event Ski Voile International hosted by Yacht club Antibes Juan Les Pins January 17th to 20th, the snow is already on the mountains so with a bit of sun and some wind it will be a great event.
