POR 66 “Drago”, Jose’ Matoso, Gustavo Lima & Nate Campbell win the 5th Winter Series.
It was a super final day in Portugal for the 15 International teams competing in the 5th Cascais Winter Series, with a steady 10kt breeze from 300 degrees. The first race was won by GER 1140 “Smaug” helmed by Nicola Friesen who was 4th on the first down wind leg but with Vincie Hoesch and Oliver Mose, selected the favourable right hand gate which gave them a lead they held until the end. In 2nd place was RUS 76 with Dmitry Samokhin, 3rd was GER 1123 helmed by new owner Jose Carlos Pina.
Winners of race 6 were GER 1140 “Smaug” Nicola Friesen, Vincent Hoesch & Oliver Mose.
In the final race of the day (race 7 of the series), the wind began to drop which made the left hand side of the course stronger… ESP 71 & GER 1162 were under pressure as they were both OCS in race 6, so when the Individual Recall Flag was displayed it was nervous times… However, GER 1162 decided to re-start, but never got back in the game, whilst ESP 71 “Gunter” had a magnificent race playing the left side to win and move a delighted helm Javier Scherk with Diogo Barros and Paulo Manso to a fantastic 2nd place overall !
Runner’s Up Overall in 5th Winter Series, ESP 71 “Gunter” Javier, Diogo & Paulo (behind).
In 2nd place behind “Gunter” in the final race was GER 1123 “Nice Shot” who followed up their 3rd place in race 6 with another brilliant race to give Jose Carlos Pina a good feeling having recently purchased the boat from Michael Zankel. Crewed by Pedro Andrade and Francisco Pina this new team could not have made a more pleasing start to their Dragon sailing, well done. In 3rd place in race 7 was POR 66 “Drago” so Jose’ and his team secured the overall victory by a healthy 7 points.. It was a very good win for Jose’ who was sailing with his “normal” Olympian crew Gustavo Lima and a replacement Nate Campbell, (who was standing in for Frederico Melo away Finn Sailing).
3rd Overall were RUS 76 “Strange Little Girl” Dmitry Samokhin, Andrey Kirilyuk & Aleksey Bushuev.
It was another great showing for Dmitry and his top team as they had to dig deep to make an overall “podium” finish, but this crew from St Petersburg never give up and in the end were just 2 points from the runners up spot.
The top “Corinthian” team was the ever consistent SWE 385 “Still Crazy” helmed by Stefan Winberg, crewed by Thomas & Nicola Wilton. With three top 5 places throughout the 7 races, this experienced crew finished 7th overall in this very strong International field.
Top Corinthians, POR Class President Mario Quina, with Stefan, Nicola and Thomas..
So another very successful regatta hosted by the Club Naval de Cascais who now look forward to the 2nd (European) Grade 1 event of 2016, when the 21st HM Juan Carlos Trophy will take place April 7th to 10th. With 30 boats already confirmed it will be another excellent opportunity to showcase our wonderful Dragon Class to the World…..
